Coffee Brewing Method 3: Espresso Machine (Espresso)

Espresso—often referred to as “Italian espresso”—uses high pressure to force hot water through finely ground coffee, extracting a concentrated “shot” of coffee essence. Though the serving size is small, the brewing process is both simple and fast. Espresso offers a rich flavor, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and lower caffeine content compared to larger-volume coffee extractions, making it a favorite among those who love an intense coffee aroma.

Key Features of Espresso Machines

·       High-Pressure Extraction
Espresso machines utilize strong pressure to quickly pull the flavorful essence from coffee grounds, producing a shot brimming with aroma.

·       Temperature Control
Precise temperature management ensures that each espresso captures the coffee’s natural flavor without scorching or under-extracting.

·       Fast Brewing
Extraction takes just 25–30 seconds, making espresso perfect for commercial settings or anyone who needs a quick coffee fix.

Espresso Equipment

Espresso machines generally cost more than standard drip (American-style) coffee makers. The main difference between espresso and drip coffee makers lies in flavor intensity and serving size. Espresso uses pressure to create a dense, robust brew, preserving the oils and rich mouthfeel of the coffee beans. Drip coffee, on the other hand, is more akin to pour-over coffee—milder, smoother, and typically brewed in larger quantities.

Espresso Brewing Steps

1.     Dose and Distribute
Fill the portafilter basket with finely ground coffee, then level the surface evenly.

2.     Preheat the Cup
Warm your espresso cup to help maintain the beverage’s optimal temperature.

3.     Heat Water to About 90°C (194°F)
This temperature range is ideal for espresso extraction.

4.     Start the Extraction
Attach the portafilter to the espresso machine. Allow pressurized hot water to pass through the coffee grounds.

5.     Apply Proper Pressure
The machine’s pump forces water through the grounds at high pressure, creating the espresso.

6.     Collect the Shot
The concentrated espresso flows into your warmed cup, ready to be enjoyed immediately.
